Welcome to Oracle 18c

Where did Oracle 18c come from?

Keen followers of the Oracle software might be surprised to hear the Oracle Database 18c is now available on the Oracle Cloud and Oracle Engineered Systems. Up until now Oracle has had a steady flow of updates and software releases, most recently bringing them up to version 12c. However, as of mid-February Oracle has changed pace and announced a new “yearly release pattern”. As the release pattern will now be aligned with the year, so will the version number, explaining 18c as the first release of 2018. This release schedule alongside a simplification of the patching process will work greatly to keep software more up to date and avoid problems associated with much larger one-off updates.

So, what’s new?

Jumping ahead 6 editions might scare you to think how much has changed. Not to worry, Oracle’s Dominic Giles explains that it “may be simpler to regard ‘Oracle Database 18c’ as ‘Oracle Database 12c Release 2 (’. So as a result of the new mantra of frequent but smaller updates, Oracle 18c (or 12c release 2) is mainly focused on incremental enhancements to prepare for the future.

The enhancements in this release focus on an essential 6 areas;

  • Performance
  • High Availability
  • Multitenant
  • Security
  • Data Warehousing
  • Development
