For seasoned VMware users this will be an exciting opportunity to expand and evolve into a new infrastructure. For those less familiar with the ever-growing cloud revolution, we’ll try to break down what all this means.
VMware Cloud on AWS: Deploy and Manage
What is VMware Cloud?
VMware Cloud is a collection of the best VMware software products for building private cloud infrastructure. The various aspects that make up VMware cloud include vSphere, vCenter Site Recovery Manager, vCloud and various other applications that work together to help build, monitor and protect virtual machines and operating systems. Most recently this service has been offered through the Amazon Web Service (AWS) in the US and Europe.
What is AWS?
Amazon Web Service (yes, as in the online shopping site Amazon) is an IT infrastructure platform that provides services just like VMware Cloud with the building blocks essential for building cloud-based applications and data centres.
So how are they connected?
As Mark Lohmeyer, senior vice president and general manager of the Cloud Platform Business Unit at VMware stated;
“VMware Cloud on AWS provides a fast and cost-effective way to migrate mission-critical applications, or even entire data centres, to the cloud. And once in the cloud, we provide the industry-leading Software-Defined Data Centre capabilities of VMware, coupled with the elasticity, breadth, and depth of AWS infrastructure and services, making it the ideal platform for modern applications.”
The joining of VMware Cloud and AWS has allowed for several important functions such as:
Simplifying cloud migration of any scale
Migrate thousands of virtual machines, live, without retrofit – from individual apps to entire data centres.
Eliminating the rework tax
Leverage consistent infrastructure and operations to integrate the public cloud with your existing investments.
Modernizing your apps
Leverage cloud-scale infrastructure and services to extend the value of your enterprise apps.
AWS Down Under
At VMworld 2018, VMware announced that VMCloud on AWS is now available in the Asia-Pacific region (Sydney). This fantastic development has brought some amazing opportunities to Australia and New Zealand.
As Paul Migliorni, AWS managing director for the region said, ““ANZ enterprises have been asking us for some time to bring VMware Cloud to the AWS Sydney Region, as it will enable them to rapidly migrate a wide range of applications to AWS, while retaining the benefits of their existing relationship with VMware.”
