The word ‘creativity’ has many definitions. One definition is ‘the ability to see in new ways and to make unusual connections that other people miss’.
However creativity also requires knowledge and discipline because in the world of business, a creative idea must pay its way and actually enhance workplace processes and provide benefits to the organisation and its clients.
Here are five ways to encourage corporate creativity:
- Play – To produce new insight and action demands the ability to suspend judgement and allow new and old ideas to connect in different ways. This is play, internal and mental play, where the rules are flexible enough to allow that anything is possible.
- Flexible persistence – If creative ideas are to be successful, team members have to push them through. No new idea will go through unchallenged. Persistence is the key. However the persistence must be flexible in its shape and implementation, otherwise the idea might be rejected.
- Purpose – Team members respond more to the idea that their efforts add purpose and value to the organisation’s brand rather than just another year of profit, loss or something in-between. So look for ways to link your team’s creative solutions to the creative challenges their organisation faces.
- Power – Work teams must have the ability and power to get good things to happen.
- Attention – Team members will be super innovative at tasks that attract a high level of positive interest. Therefore ensure they get rewarded for their innovative efforts. This ensures they are more likely to keep producing real innovative solutions to real business problems.
