Hristo Hristov, was the winner of the June 2017 New Horizons Sweepstakes competition. The prize was the opportunity to select 1 of 6 locations around the world, to complete a study program of their choice.
Studying Project Management as an International Student
At the beginning of July I received the news that I was one of the lucky people who won a training of my choice at one of 6 destinations from the network of New Horizons Learning Centers around the world - Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, Singapore, Dublin or Dubai. I had to read it several times to believe that it was true.
All the destinations looked really attractive, but I chose Sydney because I had heard a lot of good things about the city and for Australia as a whole, and it's far from everything familiar, which further stimulates my curiosity and my adventurous spirit.
The decision about the destination was taken very quickly and the decision to study Project Management Boot Camp was the most appropriate, because it will help me to start with more confident and clear plans new personal and professional projects.
I was eager to embark on this new adventure - 22 hours on flights with stops in Belgrade, Abu Dhabi and Sydney, finishing in 15 500 kilometres and 9 days exploring totally new city abroad.
As soon as I arrived on Sunday, I realized that Sydney navigation was not a difficult task, and I used a train to get to my hotel. I managed to leave my luggage and immediately walked around the city to explore it and know where the New Horizons training center was, to check where I could have breakfast, where I could have a cup of coffee (The coffee is very nice here) and what awaits me around.
After I met our lecturer Magda for the Project management Boot Camp course I saw that she is very positive and friendly person. Magda is a amazing professional with rich experience and shares with us her knowledge’s about the project management and good examples about the successful projects and the mistakes that can be made. Our group was small but international and with a great sense of humor. Every day we learn new things with them and have a lot of fun.
Christine and the New Horizons team took me out to dinner and drinks on my first night in Sydney, and they advised me about interesting places that I can visit in my free time. The whole New Horizons team was very friendly and took care that my stay in Sydney was to be unforgettable.
I was curious to learn more about the life in Sydney and I explored it with walking, cycling, public transport and by Ferry. I managed to visit places like Harbour Bridge, Opera House, the Botanical Garden, Blue Mountains, Taronga Zoo and some of the beaches. My interest in the arts brought me to the Museum of Contemporary Art and Museum of Madame Tussauds.
Everything I had heard about Sydney turned out to be true, and I really loved this new city and its internationality and friendliness. Watch the video to hear first hand from Hristo about his trip.
In addition to the tourist destinations, and sticking to the project management theme, I was been able to visit several events related to entrepreneurship at a local Meet Up Group to learn more about the opportunities and good examples in this area in Australia.
It was amazing 9 days experience in Australia, filled with a lot of funny moments, new knowledge’s and exploration of a wonderful city - Sydney. I promised myself to come back one day. Who knows maybe to start any new project or to live and study full time.
