Nano Server is a new installation option for Windows Server 2016. It has a significantly smaller hardware footprint than server core. Nano Server is ideal for scenarios such as a compute host for Hyper-V machines, DNS server, web server running IIS, or a host for cloud based applications.
You can rule various roles on a Nano Server, such as, Hyper-V, FSC, DNS, File server, IIS, SCVMM agent, desired state configuration and Data Centre bridging.
To install Nano Server, firstly you must copy the PowerShell modules for Nano Server from the installation source:

Then, import the modules so that you are able to generate your Nano Server:

To create a virtual hard disk for the Nano Server, run the following PS command:

The final step is to create a virtual machine and create a Nano Server VM from the created virtual disk.
Once the Nano Server image is done, you can perform post-installation tasks such as adding it to the domain, adding or removing features, configuring firewall etc.
To manage your Nano Server remotely, you can either use PowerShell’s Enter-PSSession command or the remote management capability from a GUI based Windows Server management.
