The best leaders develop their followers

 Aug 19, 2016

The best workplace leaders don’t rescue, or persecute their followers, they develop them!

Developing individuals and teams is a continuous cycle of observing performance, identifying learning needs, and providing the opportunity and support for the acquisition of new skills.

To ensure you develop your team members effectively, here are some steps you can follow:

  • Communicate individual and team objectives
  • Develop workplace learning programs
  • Coach and mentor your team
  • Identify resources and timelines for learning
  • Support learning and development programs

Communicate Individual and Team Objectives

When communicating individual and team objectives, create an understanding that they must reflect and meet the broader organisational objectives.

Develop Workplace Learning Programs

Once a learning plan has been developed and individual and team objectives have been established in line with the objectives of the organisation and communicated, develop suitable learning programs and implementation strategies.

Formal Training

When organising formal training, be aware of the learning objectives of the session, the materials to be used, and the time it is going to take.

Feedback should be collected and an evaluation of the session conducted to see where improvements can be made for future formal training learning programs.

Informal Training

Workplace learning occurs on-the-job in an informal setting through supervision, coaching or mentoring on a one-on-one basis or in small groups.

For example, you might show or explain to someone how to do a specific task or function, provide opportunities to practise, then provide positive and constructive feedback to improve their skills, behaviours, approaches, ultimately their performance.

Job Rotation

Job rotation is when individuals fill a role for a specific period then move on to another position. This allows them to learn and develop a broad range of skills and knowledge. It also provides the organisation with a flexible, multiskilled workforce capable of moving into different positions or working across several areas or departments.

Team Meetings

Hold regular meetings with the team or individuals. It is a useful way to clarify any problems, identify a range of possible solutions and develop a plan to resolve the problems.

Professional Networks

Getting involved in professional networks allows individuals to share ideas and information that they can bring back to the organisation.

Induction Program for New Employees

You may be responsible for conducting an induction program for new employees. This may include running brief training sessions in the use of office equipment such as the photocopier or instructions for using the telephone system as well as a general overview of Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.

So from now on only focus on developing your team members, after all, they will form part of your legacy as their leader.
