SharePoint 2016 comes in two deployment options: Standard and Enterprise edition. Although SharePoint foundation is not a part of SharePoint 2016, Microsoft still supports it.
The Standard edition supports enterprise content management, web content management, managed metadata, user profile synchronisation service, social networking, and secure store service. The Enterprise edition offers performance point, business intelligence server, Visio services, access services, power view, power pivot, InfoPath form services, and many more other enterprise features.
SharePoint 2016 can also be deployed in an extranet or internet scenarios. SharePoint Online is available as two separate subscription services: Plan 1 or Plan 2. The majority of functionalities of SharePoint 2016 are available in a hybrid SharePoint environment.

With SharePoint online, your get the management of the infrastructure provided my Microsoft. So, administrators can focus of managing other SharePoint elements. You can customise site using SharePoint online and SharePoint designer can connect to and edit sites. You can also use SharePoint designer to create and manage workflows.
SharePoint Online also offers Active Directory integration and synchronization by using Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS). This enables users to sign in to the SharePoint Online environment by using the same user name and password that they use to access their desktop environments.

With SharePoint 2016, it is easier to combine an on-premises deployment and a SharePoint Online deployment in such a way that certain features and functionalities are shared between the two environments. This approach is called a hybrid deployment.
The hybrid deployment will offer you the advantages of on-premises and SharePoint online deployment.
