In today’s blog, I will discuss about the Persistent chat server feature of Skype for Business 2015. Persistent Chat Server allows users to participate in multi-stakeholder based conversations that persists over the time. Persistent chat is an option role that helps users to track messages. Messages posted on a persistent chat server persists over the time.Persistent chat server requires one or more server running the front end services, persistent chat service, compliance service and backend SQL servers for the data store. Persistent chat supports both single server and multiple server topology. Although deploying a single-server topology might reduce the cost and complexity of a Skype for Business infrastructure, it will not scale as well as a multiple-server topology. The number of persistent chat server in your organization will depend on the topology you have selected: Single server of multiple server based topology. But at least, you will require a server running Skype for Business and another server running the Microsoft SQL Server.
Before you start deploying the persistent chat server role, you will have to decide on how many rooms do you want? will there be any ethical boundaries? Who will have the Manager, creator, presenter and the member of the rooms?
You can also enhance the persistent chat experience by adding add-ins to your chat rooms. You can create a variety of add-ins that help enhance chat room experiences by bringing in other business data into chat rooms. Chat room managers and creators can search a list of allowed add-ins for the ones that are most relevant to their respective rooms.
The deployment of the persistent chat server role includes the following steps
- Define the persistent chat topology
- Publish the topology
- Verify that pre-requisites are met
- Deploy the persistent chat servers
- Define administrators
- Finally, verify the installation
