There may come a time when you need to centre objects in Photoshop. You could eyeball it, but that isn't very precise. You could use a mathematical equation to figure out the centre, but that's too much thinking — especially when you can get Photoshop to do it for you. It's easy to centre objects in Photoshop CS3-Cs6 with just a few clicks of the 'Alignment' buttons.
How to centre objects in Photoshop
- In your Photoshop Document, choose Window > Layers to display the Layers panel.
- If one of the layers you wish to convert is the Background layer, double-click on that layer to rename and convert it to a regular layer (e.g. "Layer O"). Click OK.
- Select the layer you want to center and then select the background layer by clicking Shift+Click. If the background layer is not a contiguous layer (right next to the layer you wish to align) then you'll need to click Control+Click the layers within the Document Window instead.
- With the layers selected, click on the 'Move Tool' in the Tools panel.
- Click on the 'Align Vertical Centres' button on the tool options bar to align the vertical centre pixels on the active and linked layers.
- Click on the 'Align Horizontal Centres' button to align the horizontal centre pixels on the active and linked layers.
